St Mary’s lifeboat rushes to Old Grimsby medical emergency

It was not yet five in the morning when the pagers sounded for St Mary’s RNLI Lifeboat Station, the twenty-second launch of the year for the volunteer crew on the Isles of Scilly.

A shout before dawn

The lifeboat crew were tasked at 4.55am on Thursday 27 August to a vessel on a mooring at Old Grimsby, where one person on board had become unwell and needed medical attention.

Getting the casualty aboard

The lifeboat was quickly on scene, with two crew members put aboard the vessel to assess the casualty using the crew’s casualty care cards. The person was placed in a stretcher and brought onto the lifeboat, which then made its way back to St Mary’s Harbour.

Handover, then a flight to Treliske

At the harbour the casualty was handed into the care of a waiting ambulance crew. They were later flown off St Mary’s by coastguard helicopter R924 to Treliske for scans and treatment.

From the lifeboat station, the crew sent their best wishes to the casualty and their family, and said they hope for a good recovery. Thursday’s shout was the 22nd of the year for the RNLI crew, who turned out as Jimmy Hoddinott, Truan Hicks, Chris Jenkins, Andrew Hicks, Arran Humphries, Olly Glenn and Archie Hicks.
