Could a Cambridge Visit Change Everything for Launceston Students?

Students at Launceston College in Cornwall got a rare glimpse behind the curtain of one of the world’s most prestigious universities this week, when a senior admissions figure from the University of Cambridge paid a visit to the school.

Dr Kamran Yunus, Director of Admissions at Downing College, Cambridge, travelled to the South West to speak with both Year 11 and Year 12 students about higher education opportunities, the university application process, and what life at Cambridge is actually like.

What the Students Heard

Year 11 students received an overview of what Cambridge has to offer, along with guidance on A-level subject choices and future pathways. Year 12 students then took part in a more detailed session covering the structure of universities, student life, and the specifics of the Cambridge admissions process, including practical advice on how to put together a strong and competitive application.

Staff described the sessions as engaging and thought-provoking, saying they gave students valuable insight into higher education and helped them think more seriously about their next steps.

During his visit to Cornwall, Kamran also stopped in at the Cornwall School of Mathematics and Science.
