Launceston College A Level results open doors to Oxford

Envelopes came out fast at Launceston College this morning, and the smiles that followed told most of the story. A Level results arrived for the sixth form’s leavers on Thursday 13 August, and for two of them the next stop is Oxford.

Where this year’s students are heading

The grades came with a set of destinations to match, and two of them point to the same place. Stamatis Mavroudi-Tayler is off to the University of Oxford to read Mathematics and Computer Science. Bere Wendriner has a place at Oxford too, to study Music. One got there through maths and computing, the other through English, French and history, which says something about the range in the room.

• Edward Johnson: Chemistry A, Further Mathematics A, Mathematics A*, Physics A. Off to the University of Bristol for Chemistry.
• Aaron Jones: Chemistry A, Further Mathematics A, Mathematics A*, Physics A, EPQ A*. Bound for the University of Bristol to study Mechanical Engineering.
• Jack Lennard: Further Mathematics A, Mathematics A*, Physics A, EPQ A*. Going to the University of Bath to read Economics.
• Stamatis Mavroudi-Tayler: Computer Science A, Further Mathematics A*, Mathematics A*, Physics A*. Heading to the University of Oxford for Mathematics and Computer Science.
• William Statton: Biology A, Further Mathematics A, Mathematics A*, Physics A. Off to the University of Bristol to study Physics.
• Owen Stephens: Further Mathematics A*, Mathematics A*, Physics A*, EPQ A. Going to the University of Southampton for Aeronautics and Astronautics with an external placement year.
• Bere Wendriner: English Literature A*, French A*, History A*. Bound for the University of Oxford to study Music.
• Grace Fortey: Biology A, Mathematics A, Physics B. Heading to Cardiff University for Biological Sciences, including a professional training year.
• Lily-Mae Smith: French A, Psychology B, Spanish A. Off to the University of Exeter to study Modern Languages with an international placement.

Behind the grades at Launceston Sixth

Behind results day sits the sixth form itself. The college describes Launceston Sixth as a welcoming and supportive place where students can work towards their full potential and plan the next step with some confidence. It points to a broad range of courses, experienced teachers and study facilities set aside for sixth formers, aimed at sending students on to university, an apprenticeship or straight into work.

Alongside lessons, students take part in a range of activities outside the classroom, which the college says helps them pick up new skills and round out their time in the sixth form. Results morning is one of the fixed dates in the school calendar across Launceston, in the town’s classrooms and the kitchens where families wait for the news.

‘Incredibly proud’: the principal’s message

Matthew Thompson, principal at Launceston College, said the results came after months of work.

“I would like to congratulate every one of our students on their fantastic achievements today. These results reflect months of hard work and I am incredibly proud of everything they have accomplished. They are also a testament to the dedication of our staff and the invaluable support of families, who have encouraged our young people throughout their sixth form journey.

“Whether our students are progressing to university, apprenticeships, employment or another exciting opportunity, they leave Launceston Sixth with the confidence, skills and ambition to succeed. We wish every one of them the very best for the future and look forward to seeing all they go on to achieve.”
