Launceston College Hosts Super Saturdays for Year 6 Pupils
Primary Pupils Get a Taste of Year 7 Life
Launceston College, part of Athena Learning Trust, has been running a series of ‘Super Saturday’ sessions for local primary school children as families are being urged to choose secondary school places in Cornwall this term.
The first event was a morning of PE, with pupils taking part in indoor and outdoor sports such as dodgeball, netball and cricket. This was followed by a science-focused session, and the final ‘Super Saturday’ on Saturday 4th October will showcase the college’s design and technology offer.
Anyone interested in attending the last session can sign up here.

Easing the Transition to Secondary School
The events have been designed to give Year 6 children a clearer idea of what secondary school is like, with opportunities to spend time in new settings such as science labs. Staff hope the sessions will help pupils feel more confident and comfortable when they move into Year 7.
Launceston College also provides transition days for Year 6 pupils to meet their new tutor groups and classmates. At the start of the new school year, staggered starts allow younger students time to explore the site before older year groups return.
Staff at the college believe a smooth transition from primary to secondary lays the foundations for a positive and fulfilling educational journey.
Principal’s View
Mr Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, said:
“Our ‘Super Saturdays’ are all about giving Year 6 pupils a real taste of secondary school life in a welcoming and fun environment. From enjoying sporting challenges to exploring science labs and discovering design and technology, these sessions help children feel confident, inspired, and excited about the next stage of their learning journey. Meeting staff, trying new activities, and spending time on our campus gives pupils a sense of belonging and makes the transition to Year 7 much smoother and less daunting.”
