Launceston College Names New Head of School from September

Big changes are coming to one of Cornwall’s largest secondary schools, with a familiar face stepping up to take the reins.

Launceston College has confirmed that Linda Blackburn will become its new Head of School from September 2026, taking on day-to-day leadership of the college after three years as Vice Principal.

The appointment, made by Athena Learning Trust following what the college describes as a thorough recruitment process, recognises the impact Linda has had on the school since joining the senior leadership team.

A Local Leader Stepping Up

Linda lives locally and the college says she is deeply connected to the community it serves. She has been credited with playing a central role in shaping the direction of the college and driving continuous improvement during her time as Vice Principal.

The college says she is passionate about raising outcomes and life chances for every student, and committed to building on existing relationships with students, families and staff.

A New Leadership Structure

From September, Linda will take responsibility for running the college day-to-day. She will work alongside current Principal Matthew Thompson, who is moving into a new role as Executive Principal across both Launceston College and Pool Academy.

The new structure means Matthew will keep strategic oversight of both schools, while Linda focuses on Launceston.

Matthew said: “Linda has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment during her time as Vice Principal, and I am delighted that she will be stepping into the role of Head of School. This is a well-deserved appointment, and I am confident she will provide the clarity, continuity and ambition needed to take the college forward. I know our whole community will join me in congratulating her.”

What Ofsted Said

Launceston College is currently rated Good by Ofsted across every category inspected, including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and sixth form provision.

Inspectors highlighted that all pupils, including those with SEND, follow a broad and ambitious curriculum, learning new knowledge in a logical order and building on what they already know. Sixth-form students study for qualifications well matched to their future aspirations, with work described as suitably demanding. Pupils attending the specially resourced provision follow a curriculum that meets their needs and capabilities.

The college says the appointment marks an important step in securing strong, consistent leadership as it continues its journey of improvement.
