Four Year 9 students from Launceston College have impressed judges in a national writing competition, with one student receiving a special honour for her standout story.

The group took part in the Quay Words Young Writers Flash Fiction Competition, which challenged young writers aged 10 to 18 to craft original short stories around the theme of Generations. Depending on age, entries were limited to either 250 or 500 words, demanding both skill and creativity.

Esther’s Story to Be Published

Among the four entrants, Esther B stood out to the judging panel, earning a Highly Commended mention. Her short story will now be published in print, and she has been invited to a special awards ceremony this October to celebrate her achievement.

The judges praised her work, stating:

“We thought Esther’s writing was brilliant and thought the story had great depth.”

How Launceston College Supports Young Writers

Launceston College, which is part of Athena Learning Trust, places a strong focus on literacy across all subjects. Staff aim to ensure every student becomes a confident reader and accurate writer. This includes weekly teaching of spelling, punctuation and grammar, modelling writing tasks in lessons, and encouraging students to self-check their work regularly.

Reading is also a key part of daily life at the college. Students take part in a tutor reading programme four times a week, and those who need extra help receive targeted support to build strong literacy foundations.

Proud Moment for the School

Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, said:

“We’re incredibly proud of Esther and all the students who entered the competition. To see our young writers being recognised for their creativity and insight is inspiring. Opportunities like these help build confidence and show just how powerful student voices can be.”

Strong Reputation for Learning

Launceston College is currently rated Good by Ofsted across all key areas, including Quality of education, Behaviour and attitudes, Personal development, Leadership and management, and Sixth form provision.

Inspectors noted that all pupils, including those with SEND, follow a broad and ambitious curriculum. Students learn new knowledge in a logical order, and sixth formers study for qualifications matched to their future aspirations. Pupils attending the specially resourced provision also follow a curriculum suited to their needs and capabilities.
