Launceston Police warn parents after farm water taps damaged

If your children are out and about this summer, the police in Launceston would like a word. Officers have put out an appeal after reports of youths getting into agricultural fields and damaging the water taps and systems that keep livestock alive.

What has been happening

Launceston Police say they have received reports of young people trespassing on farmland and causing criminal damage to water taps and livestock water systems.

In the current hot weather, that damage does not stay small. Animals rely on those water sources, and a broken supply can leave livestock with nothing to drink. Farmers are then left to cover the cost, repairing the damage and refilling water containers before the animals go without.

Entering private land without permission and causing damage is unacceptable and may count as a criminal offence, the force said.

The appeal to parents

With the summer holidays now underway, officers are asking parents and guardians to keep track of where their children are, who they are with, and what they are doing.

“A simple conversation can help prevent incidents like this and protect local farms, animals, and the wider community,” the appeal said.

If you see suspicious activity in rural areas, Launceston Police ask that you report it to Devon & Cornwall Police through the force website or by calling 101. In an emergency, or if a crime is in progress, always call 999.
