Launceston’s St Joseph’s U11s concede once all day, in the final

Twenty-six goals scored. One conceded. And that one arrived at the worst possible moment.

The U11 football squad at St Joseph’s School in Launceston have returned as champions of the OCRA Small Schools Tournament, after what the school described as a day of dominant performances, grit and outstanding sportsmanship.

Four games, four clean sheets

The team set the tone from the opening whistle with a 10-0 win against Bere Alston B.

Bere Alston A proved a tighter test. The squad kept their composure and their passing sharp to take a 2-0 win in the second match.

From there the momentum only grew. The school called the third game an attacking masterclass, as the players beat Shebbear 8-0, before finishing the group stage with a 4-0 win over Mary Tavy & Brentor.

A final between two unbeaten sides

That set up a showdown with Lew Trenchard, who had also gone through the tournament without losing.

It was a hard-fought, competitive match. And for the first time all day, St Joseph’s found themselves behind, conceding an early goal to trail 1-0.

The players dug deep and rallied together. They fought back to win 2-1 and lift the trophy.

Nine players, one trophy

All nine players involved were, in the school’s words, an absolute credit to St Joseph’s. Beyond the skill on show, the school said they conducted themselves with sportsmanship and respect from start to finish.

The school has also thanked OCRA for hosting what it called a brilliant tournament.
