St Joseph’s Launceston is adding a second Year 6 class for 2026

St Joseph’s in Launceston is changing the shape of its final Junior School year. From September 2026 the school is moving to a two-form Year 6, with pupils taught in two smaller classes inside a dedicated Year 6 suite. The school says it is part of a wider expansion of its Upper Prep provision.

Two smaller classes in a dedicated suite

Rather than one larger group, Year 6 pupils will sit in two smaller classes. The school says that means more individual attention for each child and a more focused place to learn, along with stronger pastoral support and a closer eye on wellbeing during what it calls a pivotal year.

There is also room, the school says, for pupils to build confidence and independence before they move up. Specialist teaching in French, Art, PE, Music and Drama carries on, and St Joseph’s frames the change as a way to smooth the step into Senior School and Year 7.

One year group, split into two

Smaller classes will not mean a divided year group, according to the school. Pupils will still learn together at points across the year, and trips, special events and the residential will carry on as before.

St Joseph’s says the aim is to keep friendships, collaboration and shared memories at the heart of Year 6 while running smaller classes day to day.

Headteacher Mr Scott said:

“This is an exciting step forward for the Upper Prep at St Joseph’s. Our new two-form structure will allow us to provide even more tailored support for pupils at a pivotal stage in their education, while maintaining the strong sense of community that defines our school. It will ensure every child is well-prepared, confident, and ready for a successful transition into Senior School and Year 7.”
