What Did These Launceston Students Do That’s Got Everyone Talking?
12 take on university-style research project with impressive results
Twelve students from Launceston College have successfully completed a university-style research project as part of The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme, a scheme designed to help students from non-selective state schools access top universities.
Challenging Research and Academic Skills
The Year 9 and Year 10 students — Erin, Indiana, Eleanor, Merryn, Ilya, Nico, Leo, Harry, Jaxon, Hayden, Caspar, and Dexter — were supported by a PhD tutor as they worked through a complex academic topic focused on viruses. Each student completed a 2,000-word report, showcasing advanced research and essay-writing skills not usually expected until higher education.
The programme encourages critical thinking and academic confidence by allowing students to explore challenging concepts in depth. By completing the Scholars Programme, the students not only developed their research capabilities but also gained a taste of what university life and study involves.
Supporting Higher Education Aspirations
Designed to support pupils from state schools, The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme provides the tools and motivation for students to pursue higher education. It’s known to boost academic achievement at GCSE level and help young people realise their potential.
Launceston College, which is part of Athena Learning Trust, offers a careers programme that gives students impartial information on local education, training, and employment pathways. The programme also supports them in making informed decisions about their future.
Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, said:
“We are incredibly proud of these students for completing The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme. This achievement is a testament to their academic dedication and passion for learning. The programme has provided them with invaluable skills, including critical thinking and essay-writing, and has inspired them to aim high for their future educational journeys. We look forward to supporting them as they continue to strive for success.”
A School Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted
Launceston College has received a ‘Good’ rating across all areas in its Ofsted inspection, including Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Leadership and Management, and Sixth Form Provision.
Inspectors praised the school’s broad and ambitious curriculum, noting that all pupils — including those with SEND — build knowledge in a logical sequence. Sixth form students were found to be studying qualifications matched to their aspirations, with suitably demanding work. The specially resourced provision also meets the needs and capabilities of its pupils.
