If you cut across the A38 at Menheniot, or at any of the gaps in the central reservation between there and Trerulefoot, that manoeuvre may not be available for much longer.

National Highways has drawn up safety proposals for the stretch of the A38 between Liskeard and Trerulefoot, and they include restricting or closing some of the crossing points. The plans go on show to the public in Liskeard this Monday (5 October).

Why this stretch of the A38

According to information shared by Liskeard Town Council, the road between the Liskeard and Trerulefoot junctions has seen a number of high severity collisions, particularly at junction cross overs.

The number of people killed or seriously injured in collisions there is 34% higher than the regional average. That figure is based on collision data from 2019 to 2024.

The consultation leaflet says the route has a history of serious and fatal collisions at several central reservation crossings.

What is being considered

The leaflet lists restrictions or closures at key A38 crossing points, including:

  • Menheniot Junction
  • Lean Quarry Junction
  • Castle Air Junction
  • Tencreek Cottage Junction

Also on the list:

  • Improved road signage and markings
  • Junction safety enhancements
  • Speed reduction measures and potential average speed cameras
  • Improvements to drainage and road maintenance

The stated aims are to improve road safety, reduce serious and fatal collisions, improve journey reliability and address long-standing concerns about this section of the A38.

What it could mean for drivers

The leaflet is upfront about the trade-off. Some drivers may need to use alternative routes, which would mean longer journeys and more traffic on some local roads. It says those impacts are currently being assessed.
