Kerdroya, World’s Largest Stone Labyrinth, Reaches Completion

After 7 Years, Cornwall’s Giant Labyrinth Finally Opens

Kerdroya, described as the world’s largest stone labyrinth, has been completed and reopened to the public on Sunday 22nd March 2026.

Located at Colliford Lake on Bodmin Moor, the large-scale land art feature was created by Cornish artist Will Coleman and is designed to celebrate the county’s landscape, heritage and traditional skills.

A Landmark Built the Cornish Way

Measuring 56 metres wide, Kerdroya has been constructed entirely using Cornish hedging. This traditional method combines stone walling with compacted earth and vegetation, creating habitats for wildlife as well as a distinctive boundary style unique to the region.

The labyrinth showcases twelve regional styles of Cornish hedging, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the craft while walking through the structure.

The full route to the centre and back is around one mile long, winding through approximately 780 yards of hedge.

Seven Years in the Making

The project has taken seven years to complete. Over that time, it has supported skilled craftspeople and helped bring attention back to the importance of Cornish hedges, which act as key wildlife corridors.

More than 500 native plant species can be found in Cornish hedges, supporting pollinators, birds, bats and hedgehogs.

Will Coleman, artistic director at Golden Tree Productions and creator of Kerdroya, said:
“Our stone hedges might cause concern to drivers not used to the Cornish lanes, however more than 500 native plant species can be found in Cornish hedges. The hedge network right across Cornwall provides vital homes and passageways for pollinators, birds, bats, hedgehogs and other wildlife. It has been really exciting to see some of our native wildflowers take ownership of Kerdroya. It’s over to nature now to have a bit of fun as Kerdroya evolves over the next millennia.”

He added in Cornish: “Tacklow an tekka a dal aga gortos!” (“The most beautiful things are worth waiting for.”)

A Community Effort

Each yard of the labyrinth has been sponsored by hedge-pledgers, community groups and local businesses. Engraved marker discs line the path, featuring personal messages including dedications, memorials and reflections on Cornwall.

Will Coleman said:
“Without the support of our community hedge-pledgers, sponsors and skilled craftsmen, this project would never have got off the ground, let alone reached completion. From its beginnings as a disused car-park, we have created a lasting legacy to generations past and for generations to come, providing a mindful space that celebrates Cornwall’s people, industry, landscape and biodiversity.”

Visiting Kerdroya

Entry to Kerdroya is free, with parking available at the nearby Colliford Lake car park for a charge.

The project has been supported by a range of organisations including Cornwall National Landscape, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Cornwall Council, South West Lakes Trust, South West Water, FEAST, Arts Council England, Guild of Cornish Hedgers and CREST, alongside local sponsors and community funding. The principal hedging contractor was Leighton Paull.

About Will Coleman

Will Coleman is a film-maker, author, musician and educational consultant. He is a former director and musician with Kneehigh Theatre and founder of Golden Tree Productions.

In 2016, he led the creation of ‘The Man Engine’, a 40ft engineered puppet built to highlight Cornwall’s mining history and its global connections.

Alongside Kerdroya, he is involved in promoting Cornish culture and language through the ‘Go Cornish’ programme for primary schools.
