Liskeard honours 40 years of the Royal Naval Association

Flags dipped, medals caught the sun and the sound of brass carried down the town’s streets on Sunday, as Liskeard turned out to mark forty years of one of its longest-standing community organisations.

A parade through the town

The occasion was the 40th anniversary of the Liskeard Branch of the Royal Naval Association, marked with a Freedom of the Town Parade, a Service of Remembrance and a day of anniversary celebrations. Town Crier Chris Smirthwaite led proceedings in full ceremonial dress, followed through the streets by mace bearers Alex Hearn and Dan Keddle, standard bearers, veterans, serving personnel and the Liskeard Mayoral Party.

Veterans, serving personnel, standard bearers, local organisations, councillors and residents all came together for the occasion, with the parade winding past shopfronts and townsfolk who stopped to watch it pass.

Forty years of service to the town

The day gave the town a chance to reflect on, remember and celebrate the Royal Naval Association’s long-standing contribution to Liskeard and the wider community over the past four decades. Serving personnel marched alongside decorated veterans, some leaning on sticks, one making the journey on a mobility scooter, a reminder of the years of service behind the medals on show.

Liskeard Town Council was delighted to support the event through funding and practical assistance, including the road closure, first aid provision and the band, helping to ensure the celebrations ran smoothly and safely throughout.

The Mayor extended his thanks to Marie Belfitt, Chair of the Liskeard Branch RNA, Cllr Simon Cassidy, members of the RNA committee, St Pinnock Brass Band, volunteers, veterans, serving personnel and everyone who helped make the event such a success.
