Looe Town Council lands Silver award, with Gold in its sights

How do you know if your town council is doing its job properly? In Looe, there is now a national answer to that question.

Looe Town Council has been awarded Silver status in the Local Council Award Scheme, a national accreditation for town and parish councils.

What the Silver award recognises

The scheme recognises councils that show strong governance, transparency, effective financial management, community engagement and a commitment to continuous improvement.

The council says that for residents, the award offers reassurance that the town council is operating to a high standard. That covers publishing information openly and managing public funds responsibly. It also covers engaging with the community through events, projects and communications.

Projects behind the recognition

According to the council, the award also reflects its ongoing work to improve the services and facilities it provides.

It pointed to three projects in particular:

• the new library layout
• the tourist information space
• the toilet refurbishment programme

Councillors and staff credited

The council described reaching Silver as a fantastic achievement. It said the result reflects the hard work of councillors and staff alike.

But it isn’t treating Silver as the finish line. The council says it is committed to building on the recognition and to keep improving.

In a statement, the council thanked everyone who supports and engages with it, adding: “We’re proud of this achievement and are already setting our sights on Gold.”
