Seaquest Southwest Survey Uncovers Marine Marvels in Mounts Bay

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, a dedicated team of volunteers from the Mounts Bay Marine Group, accompanied by staff members from St Aubyn’s Estate, headed to St. Michael’s Mount for their monthly Seaquest Southwest survey. This initiative, run by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas Team, aims to enhance understanding, conservation, and protection of marine wildlife and habitats for future generations.

Building Community Connections

The partnership between Mounts Bay Marine Group and St. Michael’s Mount blossomed from last year’s Your Shore Network project, “Tackling the EmergenSea.” This project focuses on fostering connections within the local community to the marine world. Thanks to these efforts, the group has successfully engaged the community in vital marine conservation work.

Dolphin Sightings Thrill Volunteers

During the recent survey, participants were thrilled to spot several Common Dolphins in the bay. These sightings underscore the importance of regular marine monitoring and the rich biodiversity of Mounts Bay.

For those interested in learning more about the Seaquest Southwest programme, the group is holding a monthly meeting on Monday, 3rd June, at The Yacht Inn, Penzance. Newcomers are welcome to join and contribute to the conservation efforts.

As a final tip, the group advises keeping an eye out in the bay, as there have been sightings of Risso’s Dolphins as well.
