Birdwatching Group Records 20 Species at Mevagissey Harbour
A small group of nature and wildlife enthusiasts faced cold winds and rain over the weekend to take part in a birdwatching event at Mevagissey Harbour.
Birdwatching in Tough Conditions
Six people joined the outing, which was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, Founder and Chair of Connect with Nature, RSPB Kernow Group Leader, and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds. The fieldtrip was led by Rob Nicholls.
Despite the challenging weather, the group recorded sightings of twenty bird species around the harbour.
Species Seen on the Day
Birds spotted during the event included Black Headed Gull, Blue Tit, Carrion Crow, Cormorant, Dunnock, Feral Pigeon, Fulmar, Gannet, Great Black-backed Gull, Great Northern Diver, Herring Gull, Jackdaw, Mallard Duck, Oystercatcher, Pied Wagtail, Purple Sandpiper, Rock Pipit, Razorbill, Shag and Turnstone.
Two of the species seen, the Great Northern Diver and the Purple Sandpiper, are winter visitors to the area.
In addition to the birdlife, the group also observed two Grey Seals in the harbour.
A Warm End to the Outing
The event finished with coffee and biscuits, giving everyone a chance to warm up and recharge after a wet and windy session of birdwatching.
