Connect with Nature Group Spots 24 Bird Species at Mevagissey

Twenty-four species in a single morning, all from one of Cornwall’s prettiest harbours. Not a bad return for a few hours by the water with a pair of binoculars.

Nine nature and wildlife enthusiasts gathered at Mevagissey Harbour for a birdwatching outing organised by Connect with Nature. The weather played its part too. Sunny skies and a light breeze made for refreshing conditions on the water’s edge.

A Productive Morning on the Harbour

The group recorded twenty-four different bird species over the course of the trip. Mevagissey’s working harbour and surrounding coastline draw a wide variety of seabirds and shore-dwelling species, making it a popular spot for those with a keen eye and a willingness to stand still for a while.

The fieldtrip was led by Rob Nicholls, who guided the group through the morning’s sightings.

Who Organised It

The outing was put together by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, founder and chair of Connect with Nature. Rowena also leads the RSPB Kernow Group and serves as publicity officer for Cornwall Birds, making her a familiar name in Cornish wildlife circles.

Ice Cream and a Late Lunch

As is tradition for the group, the morning’s birdwatching was followed by a stop at Ice Cream Mevagissey for ice cream and freshly cooked round donuts. The party then headed to She Sells Mevagissey for a late lunch to round things off.

Twenty-four species, sunshine, donuts, and lunch by the harbour. There are worse ways to spend a morning in Cornwall.
