Mevagissey birdwatch spots dolphins and 25 bird species

A morning at the harbour turned into something more than a slow walk with a pair of binoculars.

A sunny start at the harbour

Eight nature and wildlife enthusiasts spent the morning birdwatching at Mevagissey Harbour, and the weather played along. It was sunny with a light breeze, the kind that keeps things refreshing rather than chilly.

The group worked their way around the harbour with their eyes on the water and the sky. By the end of the trip the tally had climbed higher than most would expect from a single morning.

What they saw

The count came to twenty five species of birds. Alongside them were two species of butterfly, a Red Admiral and a Small White, and a single moth, the Hummingbird Hawk Moth.

And then there was the moment out to sea. A small pod of dolphins appeared off the coast, the sort of sighting that turns a good morning into one people talk about afterwards.

Who ran the trip

The event was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, Founder and Chair of Connect with Nature, RSPB Kernow Group Leader, and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds. Rob Nicholls led the fieldtrip.

A proper Mevagissey finish

As usual, the group made time for the important things. They stopped by Kelly’s for their favourite ice cream, then settled in at She Sells Mevagissey for a late lunch.
