An RAF aircraft swept over the north Cornwall coastline on Thursday 16th April in a flypast honouring one of the most decorated RAF officers of the Second World War, Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, the man who led the legendary Dambusters Raid in 1943.

The tribute took place over Porthtowan, where Guy’s closest living relative, his cousin Mrs Janet Penrose de Gaynesford, watched from her clifftop home surrounded by friends and family, sharing memories of the man she knew simply as Guy.

A Hero With Cornish Roots

The occasion carried particular local significance. Guy’s mother was from Porthleven, and he spent time in Cornwall during his childhood, returning again while on leave during the war. He was killed in action in 1944, aged just 26, having flown around 174 operational missions.

The Flypast

The aircraft, an Airbus A400M Atlas, made a striking sight over the bay. With a wingspan of more than 40 metres, wider than three double-decker buses end to end, it drew a clear line between the scale of today’s RAF operations and the Lancaster aircraft flown by Guy during the war.

The tribute was arranged by RAF personnel at RAF Brize Norton, with Flight Lieutenant Callum Scott and his crew planning the mission in Guy’s honour and in recognition of Janet’s role in keeping his memory and the sacrifice of Bomber Command crews alive.

“He Gave Everything He Had”

Janet, who described Guy as a big brother figure, said: “I always saw Guy as a big brother. He was kind, full of energy, and completely dedicated to what he believed in. He wanted to make a difference, and he gave everything he had. I was heartbroken when he was killed.”

Alan Bessant, who helped organise the flypast, paid tribute to both Janet and the RAF: “I am so pleased we were able to make this happen for Janet. She has spent many years keeping Guy’s memory alive and remembering the crews of Bomber Command, who never came home. I would also like to thank the Royal Air Force and everyone involved at RAF Brize Norton for making this possible.”

For those watching from the clifftop and the surrounding area, the flypast brought together today’s Royal Air Force and the memory of one of its most distinguished wartime officers.
