South Crofty opens the £4m-funded buildings its miners will need

A mine needs more than a shaft and a headframe. Before production can start, the people working it need somewhere to change, eat, fix machinery and keep their kit. At South Crofty, that piece of the picture is now in place.

Cornish Metals has officially opened the Bartle’s Foundry buildings at its mining site at South Crofty. The new block brings workshops, stores, changing facilities, a canteen and office space, and the company calls it an important milestone.

What Bartle’s Foundry is for

The facilities are there to take the extra workforce and equipment the site will need once it moves into production. Cornish Metals describes them as essential for exactly that.

A plaque on the wall inside puts it plainly. The Bartle’s Foundry Project is the creation of workshops, stores and staff facilities to support the South Crofty project.

Who came to the opening

The official opening drew the suppliers who worked on the construction of Bartle’s Foundry, local politicians, the Cornish Metals site team and its Board of Directors, along with other local stakeholders. A red ribbon was stretched across the open doors of one of the new workshop bays for the moment itself.

Where the money came from

The construction was supported by £4,190,500 in funding from Cornwall Council through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

“We are grateful for the support shown by the Council with this project and the wider re-development of South Crofty,” Cornish Metals said in its announcement.
