Mystery at Sea: Lifeboat and Air Teams Launch Search Off Newlyn After Debris Found

Debris spotted eight miles out prompts urgent response

The RNLI’s Penlee Lifeboat Station was tasked at 7:40am on 4th May 2025 following reports of debris found eight nautical miles south-east of Newlyn.

Among the items spotted were a lifejacket, fish boxes, plastic bags, crates, and wooden objects.

All-Weather Lifeboat and Air Support Deployed

Penlee’s All-Weather Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ (ALB), with a crew of seven RNLI volunteers, launched to investigate the scene. They were joined by the Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter ‘Rescue 924’ and a fixed-wing aircraft. The fishing vessel ‘Gina C’, which had first contacted Falmouth Coastguard, also assisted with the search.

The teams performed various search patterns across the area, working closely together to ensure thorough coverage.

Search Stood Down After No Further Evidence Found

After several hours of searching, the Coastguard was satisfied that the area had been fully saturated. The ALB was stood down and returned to Newlyn at 1pm after no further evidence was found.

Weather conditions at the time were described as easterly force 5, with a moderate sea and good visibility.
