18th Anniversary of Joe Way’s Passing Marked With Newquay Paddle

Eighteen years on, the memory of one little boy is still pulling people together at Newquay Harbour, and the numbers tell their own story.

7th May 2026 marks another anniversary of the passing of Joe Way, who died in 2008 at the age of four. What started as a small gathering of family, friends and RNLI supporters in his memory has since grown into the Joe Way Paddle for Life, a community event that has raised £188,000 for charity over the years.

A loss that never leaves

Joe’s family have spoken openly about how difficult the journey has been since 2008.

“Living with the loss of Joe is something that never leaves you. It’s been a varied and often difficult road, but what has carried us through is the support of the community and the ability to turn that loss into something positive. The paddle is about celebrating Joe’s life, not just remembering his passing.”

That sentiment has shaped the event from the start. Rather than a day of mourning, the paddle has become a celebration of life, connection and hope, drawing in locals, visitors and supporters year after year.

More than a fundraiser

Since the first paddle in 2008, the event has supported causes that make a real difference to individuals and families. Money raised goes towards charitable work carried out in Joe’s name, with each year’s gathering bringing fresh faces alongside familiar ones.
