All nine Newquay beaches now patrolled by RNLI lifeguards

Peak season has arrived on the Newquay coast, and from today every one of the town’s nine beaches has RNLI lifeguards on patrol, seven days a week.

The lifeguards will be on duty from 10am to 6pm daily across the whole stretch, with the good weather forecast to hold.

Which beaches are covered

All nine beaches are now open and patrolled: Crantock, Fistral, Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne, Lusty Glaze, Porth, Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth.

The RNLI is encouraging anyone heading to the coast to pick a lifeguarded beach while the sunshine lasts. If you are heading somewhere else in Cornwall, you can check the RNLI’s lifeguarded beach finder to see which beaches near you are covered and when.

Know your flags

The flag system tells you where it is safest to be in the water, and it splits the beach by activity.

If you are swimming or bodyboarding, stay between the red and yellow flags. If you are surfing, paddleboarding or kayaking, use the area marked out by the black and white chequered flags.

What to do if you get into trouble

The RNLI’s advice if you find yourself struggling in the water is to Float to Live. Tilt your head back, relax and control your breathing until you can call for help or swim to safety.

If you need the lifeguards, raise one arm and they will come to you. And if you are unsure about anything, the lifeguards say to speak to them before you get in.
