Changes Coming to Newquay Car Parks: What You Need to Know

Published On: 4 March 2025Last Updated: 4 March 2025By

Drivers using Newquay’s Manor and St Georges car parks will soon need to adjust to a new payment system, as Cornwall Council removes the pay on exit barriers this March.

When Are the Barriers Being Removed?

Cornwall Council has confirmed the removal dates:

  • Manor Car Park18th March
  • St Georges Car Park19th March

Despite the changes, both car parks will remain open throughout the day while the barriers are taken down.

What This Means for Drivers

Once the barriers are removed, drivers will need to buy a ticket from a pay and display machine. Cornwall Council is advising motorists to check the pay machines in the car park before leaving their vehicle to ensure they are aware of the correct payment process.

Why Are the Barriers Being Removed?

Cornwall Council has outlined three key reasons for the change:

  • Accessibility – Some drivers found the barrier-controlled system difficult to use.
  • Safety Concerns – Many incidents of tailgating were reported, where drivers attempting to avoid payment followed closely behind other vehicles, sometimes leading to collisions.
  • Reliability Issues – The barriers frequently suffered from technical failures, hardware malfunctions, and vandalism.

A New Way to Pay

With advancements in parking technology, drivers can now use JustPark to extend their parking sessions remotely. Regular car park users may also benefit from discounts through JustPark’s multi-use sessions and resident season tickets.

Cornwall Council is urging all drivers to take note of these changes to avoid any confusion or issues when parking in Newquay.
