The wind was blowing a hoolie across Towan Head. Eleven people turned up with their binoculars anyway.

The nature and wildlife enthusiasts had come out for a birdwatching trip on the headland at Newquay, organised by Connect with Nature with Rowena. By the end of it they had counted twenty species of birds.

Cornish choughs take to the air

As always, the Cornish choughs gave them a good show.

The group enjoyed watching the birds doing their famous acrobatic flight.

A red-throated diver was among the other birds caught on camera, out on the choppy water.

Afterwards the group headed back to the car park for an enjoyable chat over coffee, tea and biscuits.

Some of them weren’t finished yet, and went up to the headland afterwards.

Cornish word of the day

The group also shared a Cornish word of the day to go with the trip: mena.

It translates directly to “hill”, “mountain” or “high place”, and is often spelled meneth or mynydd in related Celtic languages.
