If you drive, cycle or walk into Newquay along Cliff Road, get ready for a longer way round. From next month one of the town’s main approaches becomes a building site, and it is staying that way well into next year.

The work is the next phase of the Mid Cornwall Metro Cliff Road Improvements, covering the stretch between Oakleigh Terrace and Edgcumbe Avenue. It starts on 7 September 2026, with the aim of making the road safer and easier for people walking, wheeling, cycling and using public transport, and giving the town a more welcoming entrance towards the Station Quarter.

The list of works includes a new cycle route, wider footways and public realm improvements, a new pedestrian crossing, changes to kerbs and the road layout, drainage and ducting work, and fresh surfacing and road markings.

How traffic will move

While the work is under way, Cliff Road will run as a one-way system, with traffic travelling away from the town centre. Drivers heading towards the centre will follow a signed diversion route instead. Temporary lane closures and traffic signals may also be needed at certain stages.

Pedestrian access is being kept open throughout the scheme.

Extra parking to offset the changes

Some of the existing on-street parking on Cliff Road is being removed to make way for the wider footways and new crossing points, so extra parking has been put in place nearby to soften the loss.

Tolcarne Car Park will be free after 4pm right through until 31 October, then free all day from 1 November to 31 March. Oakleigh Terrace gains eight new short-stay spaces. Newquay Railway Station’s free parking window goes up to 30 minutes. And three new disabled parking spaces are being added outside Wetherspoons.

How long it will last

The works are expected to run until late spring 2027. Cormac has acknowledged the arrangements may cause some temporary disruption, and says it will do all it can to keep this to a minimum while keeping road users, pedestrians and the workforce safe.
