Community Christmas Project Returns to Help Families in Newquay

Businesses across Newquay are rallying together again this December as the town’s community Christmas toy donation project returns for a second year. The effort is led by husband and wife Jess and Laurie Gardener, joined by local mortgage broker James Savage, with one clear aim: to help make sure every child in the town receives a present this Christmas.

How the Project Began

Jess, 29, said the idea started in 2024 after the couple bought a small Santa’s letterbox and asked people in Newquay to anonymously nominate anyone who might need help. They posed two simple questions: what do people need, and where should it be delivered?

Jess said: “Sometimes we find that pride gets in the way. Many people don’t want to admit they need help, no matter what their situation is.”

Laurie, 34, added: “Then it just took off; the outpouring of support for the idea was incredible. We were absolutely inundated with presents. It really showed what Newquay is all about.”

Jess and Laurie, who run an award-winning independent travel agency in the Killacourt Retail Quarter, said the project was never about them. Jess explained: “As a parent of two little ones, I would never want to imagine a child waking up on Christmas morning thinking that Father Christmas missed them. Or having no food on Christmas Day. It’s just an awful thought.”

She added: “People may not understand that someone donating a small toy could lead to the best present that child gets all year.”

Last year’s response saw support pouring in from businesses across Cornwall, along with regional media coverage.

A Growing Team With a Shared Goal

Joining forces with Jess and Laurie this year is 41-year-old James Savage, a Newquay-born mortgage broker who has worked with local charities for many years. James previously supported DISC but explained that changes brought by Covid shaped how donations could take place.

James said: “In the years that followed 2020, I started working with businesses on voucher donation initiatives or ‘Amazon Wish Lists’ around Christmas time.”

“When Jess and Laurie messaged me this year, joining forces was a no-brainer. I just think a project like this is one of the most important things you can do on a local level.”

“It’s also just nice to see businesses collaborate rather than work in silo for their own recognition. Recognising strengths. It’s not about us; it’s about the act of charity and spirit of Christmas.”

This year the team also hopes to increase donations for older people. Jess said many in the elderly community may be alone or unable to buy for their spouse, and the project aims to help spread joy where it’s needed most.

Fundraising Day and Community Events

A fundraising day will take place on Sunday 21st December, from 10am to 2pm, hosted at Project 83. People are welcome to donate in person while enjoying live entertainment from local artists Josh Curnow, Kello Hub and Selena Brose, who are giving their time to boost the festive atmosphere.

There will also be a tombola, with all proceeds supporting Newquay’s community Christmas mission.

The project culminates in a donation event at St Michael’s Church on 22nd and 23rd December, 10am to 2pm. Organisations including the Salvation Army and Newquay Food Bank will be present, with the Food Bank adding donations of hot meals.

Stacey Matthias, Operations Manager at Newquay Food Bank, said: “The work that Jess and Laurie are doing shows the great community spirt that Newquay has. Sadly, with the cost-of-living crisis sees many residents needing that little extra help. With local initiatives like this one it makes Christmas less daunting for many and helps to ensure that all supported have a more enjoyable Christmas.”

People attending St Michael’s will be able to choose an unwrapped gift to give to someone else. Tables will be set out with toys for infants through to teens, gifts for adults and essential items like toiletries.

Laurie said: “We’re thinking beyond toys this year. There are things which people shouldn’t be without such as toiletries but unfortunately, they are.”

A Call for Support Across Newquay

Jess, who moved to Newquay from Bristol with Laurie five years ago, believes everyone can play a part in helping their town. She said: “We decided early on that if we’re going to set up life here, if our kids are going to grow up by the sea, go to school here, if we’re going to launch a business, we’re going to give back. We’re very lucky to have been accepted; we just want to play our part.”

She added: “People doing things individually is fantastic, of course. And we see that spirit all year round. But this project is about bringing the town together. Just imagine what we could do as a town for those who need support the most.”

“Newquay Community Christmas is about supporting you. If you would benefit from any of the donations this year, come along to the event in December, or just get in touch.”

How to Support the Newquay Community Christmas Project

The project is seeking brand new items and support from businesses across town. People can help in five ways:

  1. Drop off donations at L&K Travel, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm.

  2. Donate via the GoFundMe page, which will help buy food and vouchers for the event at St Michael’s.

  3. Purchase a gift from the Amazon Wishlist for toys priced between £2 and £15.

  4. Volunteer time in December, either delivering gifts or helping at the event.

  5. Spread the word across social media.
