Could This Be the End of Polystyrene Bodyboards in Newquay?
Schoolchildren Take the Lead in Recycling Drive
A new event in Newquay this week aims to tackle one of Cornwall’s most persistent beach pollution problems head-on. The “Bodyboard Breakdown” event, taking place at Newquay Junior Academy on Thursday, 6th November at 11:00am, will bring together more than 40 schoolchildren, volunteers, and environmental groups to dismantle and recycle dozens of discarded bodyboards.
The boards were collected over the summer by the Newquay Clean stakeholder group from recycling stations placed across three of Newquay’s beaches. Once stripped down, their materials will be safely recycled by Keep Britain Tidy.
Teaching the Next Generation
The hands-on workshop is designed to give children a deeper understanding of the impact of single-use polystyrene boards, which often break down into harmful microplastics that threaten marine life.
Adding to the educational experience, former UK Bodyboard Champion Rob Barber will be on hand to share his knowledge with pupils and local businesses. Rob will also stress the importance of choosing high-quality, reusable bodyboards over cheap disposable ones.
Backed by Local Leaders
The event is being supported by Newquay Town Council, Cornwall Council, the Newquay Marine Group, and local councillors as part of the ongoing campaign led by Newquay Clean to protect the local environment and improve water safety.
“This summer, our community came together to reinstate bodyboard recycling stations, and the response was overwhelming,” said Drew Creek, Mayor of Newquay and Cornwall Councillor. “Now, we’re taking the next logical step. By educating our children and engaging with retailers, we are attacking this problem at its source. We are determined to cease the sale of these environmentally destructive polystyrene boards, which are not only harmful to our ecosystem but are also unsafe in Newquay’s often ferocious riding conditions.”
Retailers Encouraged to Go Greener
The event also has the backing of Newquay BID, which is encouraging local retailers to stock safer, more sustainable alternatives. The goal is to reduce the sale of environmentally damaging polystyrene boards and promote a more responsible approach to coastal safety and sustainability.
