Fourteen butterfly species counted on a Pentire Head walk

The sun was out and the butterflies were making the most of it. Fifteen nature and wildlife enthusiasts spent a glorious, warm morning at Pentire Head in Newquay, and by the end of the walk they had recorded fourteen different species of butterfly on the wing.

A walk organised by Connect with Nature

The Butterfly Walk was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, founder and chair of Connect with Nature, RSPB Kernow Group Leader and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds. Rob Nicholls led the field trip.

With the weather so sunny and warm, the butterflies were very active and flying everywhere, which gave the group plenty to watch. They spotted a number of birds along the way too.

The butterflies they saw

Across the morning the group recorded Silver-studded Blue, Wall, Small Heath, Small Copper, Painted Lady, Red Admiral, Peacock, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Small Skipper, Large Skipper, Small White, Large White and Green-veined White.
