Mark Your Calendar: Joe Way Paddle for Life Is Back This June

The Paddle for Life is Back After a Five-Year Break

The much-loved Joe Way Paddle for Life charity event is set to return to Newquay Harbour this June after a five-year hiatus. The event, which marks the life of Newquay’s Joe Way, promises an afternoon and evening packed with fun, colour, and community spirit, all while raising funds for local charities.

Joe, who was born with Angelman’s Syndrome, passed away in 2008 at just four years old. Despite battling meningitis, Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS), and multiple superbugs, Joe was affectionately called a “miracle boy” for his resilience. Tragically, he succumbed to complete organ failure following a second bout of SJS.

The first memorial paddle took place in September 2008, shortly after Joe’s passing. Over the years, the event and associated fundraisers have collected over £180,000 for more than 20 different charities. Now, after delays caused by Covid and a family illness, the Paddle for Life is making its long-awaited return.

Marking Joe’s Milestone Birthday

Joe’s mum, Claire Way, shared the family’s motivation for bringing the event back this year:
“Joe would have been 21 last September, so the daily memories are magnified, and with what everyone has been through the last four years, it feels right to mark this milestone and spread some goodwill across the community.”

Joe’s dad, Matt, echoed the sentiment, saying:
“The last event was so good, we were nervous to go for it again. However, the Lions and Surf Lifesaving Cornwall were fully in favour, as were previous Paddle supporters as well as new supporters. It’s always been a fun community event and a great way to celebrate Joe’s short but impactful life.”

Exciting Highlights of the Day

The 2025 Joe Way Paddle for Life will feature:

  • Skydivers from Cornwall Skydive landing on Towan Beach while flying Joe’s flag.
  • Live music and DJ sets at Newquay Rowing Club.
  • Charity and food stalls, along with Titan the Robot providing entertainment.
  • A memorial paddle by RNLI beach lifeguards.

With over 200 paddlers expected, the harbour will be a hub of activity.

Local Businesses Rally to Support

Four businesses have already pledged their support with £500 each, kickstarting the fundraising pot at £2,000. Paddle veterans Start and Co, Pitched Web Design, St Columb Financial Services, and Henwood Funeral Directors have all played a role in Joe’s journey and have stepped up once more.
