Newquay council grant puts medals round young necks at Harbour Sports 2026

Every child who takes part in Newquay’s Harbour Sports Event this summer will have something to take home. Newquay Town Council has stepped in with a £120 grant to cover the cost of the medals, so nobody walks away from the harbour empty-handed on the day.

Where the money comes from

The grant is drawn from Councillor Joanna Kenny’s Community Fund, one of the pots individual councillors can direct towards causes in their area. The £120 goes straight towards medals for the Harbour Sports Event 2026, which takes place on 9 August.

It is a small amount doing a specific job. Medals are the kind of detail that separates a nice afternoon from one a child remembers, and the funding means the organisers do not have to find that cost elsewhere.

A day on the harbour

The event lands in the middle of the summer holidays, when Newquay’s harbour is already one of the busiest corners of the town. Joanna’s grant is aimed at making the day memorable for everyone taking part.

How the grants work

Councillor community funds sit alongside a wider grants pot the town council runs for groups and events across Newquay. For the 2026-27 financial year the council has set aside £7,500 in total, and the stated preference is for projects asking for up to £1,000, so the money reaches a higher number of organisations. Larger awards are possible, up to £4,000 where a project can show real need and impact, and above that only by exception.

The fund is run on a first come first served basis and there is no appeal process, so the council’s decision is final. Applicants have to read the grant policy and FAQs, complete the form, and then send supporting documents within 24 hours of an automated email, including a constitution, recent accounts and a project budget. Miss a document and the application is rejected without further assessment.
