Newquay Leisure World Launches Adult Learn-to-Swim Classes

Published On: 25 January 2024Last Updated: 25 January 2024By

In an effort to address the concerning statistic that almost one-third of the UK population cannot swim a single pool length, Newquay Leisure World has introduced a new adult learn-to-swim session. This initiative comes in light of a report by Swim England, which estimates that over fourteen million people in the UK lack basic swimming skills.

The new swimming sessions, aimed at adults, are scheduled for Monday afternoons from 2:45 to 3:30 pm. GLL senior manager Amelia Kitchen highlighted the importance of being confident in the water, especially in Cornwall, which is known for its beautiful beaches. She pointed out the unique challenges adult learners face and emphasised the fun and relaxed environment created by Ed, the swim teacher and community sports officer.

The classes, conducted in the entire pool, ensure a comfortable setting where all participants are learners. This approach is designed to ease the anxiety often associated with learning to swim later in life. Kitchen also mentioned the value of swimming as a life skill, which not only ensures safety but also opens up opportunities for engaging in other water-based activities such as surfing, sailing, and paddleboarding.

Newquay Leisure World, operated by GLL under the Better brand, is a not-for-profit social enterprise that manages this facility along with eight other leisure centres in Cornwall. The classes are open to both members and non-members, with members paying an additional fee of £3.50 per lesson, while non-members are charged £12 per session. Advanced swimmers also have the opportunity to join Swim Doctor training sessions on Monday evenings from 7-8 pm.

Given the high demand and limited slots, advance booking for these swim sessions is recommended. For more information or to book a class, interested individuals can email newquayleisureworld@gll.org or visit the Newquay Leisure World website. This initiative marks a significant step towards improving swimming proficiency among adults in the UK, particularly in a coastal region like Cornwall.
