Newquay Minor Injury Unit stays closed with no reopening date

Pick up a minor injury in Newquay and, for now at least, you’ll still need to travel out of town to get it seen.

The temporary closure of Newquay Minor Injury Unit is going to continue. The NHS made the call after a further review of the service, and described it as a difficult decision.

Why the unit is staying shut

Some things have moved forward. The NHS says progress has been made on recruiting staff and on strengthening local leadership.

But workforce pressures are still there. And until they ease, the NHS says it can’t yet offer the kind of safe, dependable service that people in the area need and deserve on a consistent basis.

No date set for reopening

There’s no target date this time. Rather than name one that might later have to move, the NHS says the unit will reopen once it is confident it can run a safe, reliable and consistent service.

It says it remains committed to reopening as soon as it is safe to do so. It also acknowledged the news will be disappointing, and thanked local communities for their patience and support.

Where to go for minor injuries

The rest of the hospital is open as normal. For minor injuries, patients can go to:

• Bodmin MIU, open 8am to 10pm
• Camborne Redruth MIU, open 8am to 10pm
• St Austell MIU, open 8am to 8pm

When the Newquay unit will open its doors again is still unknown. The NHS says further updates will be shared as they become available.
