Newquay Sessions Returns to the Killacourt with First Wave

A free day of live music is heading to the Killacourt in early July, and the people putting it on want you to walk away knowing how to stay safe in the water.

First Wave is the opening event of this year’s Newquay Sessions, and it runs on Saturday 4 July from 10am to 6pm. There are no tickets and no entry fee. Newquay Town Council is behind it, and the day is built around live music, a family-friendly atmosphere and a licensed bar on site.

Who’s playing

The line-up features Chris Hogg and The Qwest. Joining them is The Poptastic Party Show, a tribute act covering Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. The Poptastic Party Show steps in for K-Pop Krew, who had been advertised earlier.

Radio Newquay will also broadcast live from the event, with part of the show coming straight from the Killacourt.

A full day across town

First Wave is not the only thing happening in Newquay that day. The BIG Newquay Market runs from 10am to 4pm across the Killacourt and Bank Street. And from 6pm, the Newquay Carnival gets going.

The message the council wants you to hear

Ahead of the busy summer season, Newquay Town Council is using the day to push beach and water safety. It is working with local services, charities and activity providers to get the word out, with simple guidance aimed at helping visitors enjoy the coast without putting themselves in danger.

Alan Cox, RNLI Water Safety Officer for Newquay Lifeboats, will be on site. “I think it is very important to engage with families, especially visitors who don’t quite understand the dangers on and around the sea and beach,” he said.

“After a lot of recent events, which have ended badly, I urge the public just to pop to the water safety stall for some free advice on cold water shock, our float to live campaign, and beach safety. This messaging could save your life, not just for beachgoers, but everyone from swimmers to SUPs and kayakers, please help us to help you and we will see you there.”
