Newquay Street Art Trail Expands With 20 New Painted Doorways

Published On: 25 April 2026Last Updated: 25 April 2026By

Walk through Newquay this spring and you might notice something different. The walls are talking.

More than 20 painted doorways have appeared across the town centre, part of a grassroots project from Love Newquay that’s turning ordinary entrances into miniature works of art. It’s the latest chapter in what organisers are calling a full-blown cultural shift, one they say is reshaping how visitors and locals see the town.

From Surf Town to Open-Air Gallery

The doorway project sits within the wider Love Newquay Street Art Trail, an expanding collection of murals and installations that begins at Newquay train station. From there, a QR-enabled route guides walkers through the town, with each piece offering background on the artist and the story behind the work.

The trail deliberately pulls people off the main streets. Side alleys, independent shops, and quieter corners all feature, encouraging visitors to explore parts of Newquay they might otherwise walk past.

Local, national, and internationally recognised artists have all contributed.

Public Vote Now Open

Residents and visitors can pick their favourite doorway artwork through an interactive public vote running from 22nd April to 6th May.

Mark Warren, Love Newquay and Newquay BID Manager, said: “What we’re witnessing is a genuine cultural shift. Newquay town centre is becoming a living, breathing open-air gallery set against one of the most stunning natural backdrops in the UK. This isn’t just about art on walls, it’s about identity, storytelling, and creating a place people feel connected to all year round.”

Tackling the Seasonal Slump

Like most UK coastal towns, Newquay has long battled the quiet months. The street art project forms part of a wider push to keep visitors coming year-round, alongside a growing music and events calendar covering surf, skate, wellness, and alternative culture.

Grassroots live music venues, DJ-led beach events, independent food and drink, and beach yoga all feature in the mix. The aim is to give people reasons to visit Newquay in November as well as August.

Mark added: “Town centres have changed, and so have visitor expectations. People are no longer just coming for a beach they’re coming for an experience. What we’re building here blends art, music, food, wellbeing, and community into something truly distinctive. This is about creating a destination that people want to explore, share, and return to.”

Bigger Plans Ahead

With a newly secured five-year BID term, more murals and artist collaborations are already in development. Private sector investment is growing too, with local businesses commissioning their own pieces.

Love Newquay is also working with Newquay Town Council and other partners on a longer-term goal: recognition as a UK Town of Culture.

The public vote on the doorway art runs until 6th May.
