Newquay surf and watersports businesses are being invited to take part in an online roundtable next week, focused on sewage pollution and its impact on the town’s coastline and livelihoods.

The session, taking place on Tuesday 29th April at 7:00pm via Zoom, is being hosted by Clean Sea Newquay and law firm Leigh Day, and is aimed specifically at businesses whose trade depends on a clean and safe sea.

What the session will cover

The roundtable will give attendees an overview of the ongoing group legal claim against South West Water, as well as practical guidance on how businesses can record and evidence the impacts of sewage discharges. Organisers say the session will also focus on making sure local efforts align with the specific needs of surf and watersports businesses, with a dedicated opportunity to put questions directly to the legal team.

Why it matters

Newquay’s economy is deeply tied to the sea, with surfing, watersports and coastal tourism forming a significant part of the town’s identity and income. Sewage pollution poses a direct threat to that, affecting both the safety of the water and the reputation of the area as a destination.

Newquay BID, which is helping to promote the event, says it is “a really important conversation for Newquay,” adding that the town “depends on a clean, safe sea for tourism, for local businesses, and for our community.”

How to attend

The event is online and open to relevant surf and watersports businesses in the area. To receive the Zoom details, businesses are asked to get in touch with Newquay BID directly.
