Newquay Zoo Reopens Penguin Pool as Breeding Season Begins

Newquay Zoo has reopened its Penguin Pool with a newly built covered viewing area and seating space, marking one of the first visible improvements since the site was acquired by Dutch leisure group Libéma in early 2026.

The timing could not be better. The reopening coincides with the start of the colony’s annual breeding season, giving visitors the chance to watch events unfold from the new sheltered space.

Breeding Season Underway

Three chicks hatched at the zoo last year, and keepers are already monitoring nesting activity as pairs return to their nest sites.

Dan Trevelyan, Team Leader of Birds at Newquay Zoo, said:

“Spring is always a busy time for the colony. After breeding two chicks last year, we’re hopeful for another strong season. The new covered space means visitors can spend more time watching these nesting behaviours unfold and possibly get a glimpse of the eggs when they arrive.”

The 15-strong colony at the zoo is made up of Humboldt penguins, a species native to the coasts of Peru and Chile. Classified as Vulnerable in the wild, they face threats from overfishing, pollution and climate change.

The colony at Newquay forms part of a coordinated international breeding programme designed to support the long-term future of the species.

First Signs of a Bigger Transformation

The new viewing area is one of the first changes visitors will notice since Libéma’s acquisition of the zoo earlier this year.

Dan added:

“This project represents an important milestone for us. It reflects our passion for conservation and education, and it’s also one of the first visible signs of the wider transformation now underway across the site. There’s a lot more like this to come, and that’s exciting!”

The development was funded by a generous legacy donation made while the zoo operated as a charity under Wild Planet Trust.

Further enhancements are planned as part of Libéma’s wider investment programme. These include new play areas and a walk-through lemur experience ahead of the summer season.

Looking further ahead, the zoo has also hinted at more ambitious plans, including the introduction of giraffes to the Savannah.

For families and returning visitors, the newly reopened Penguin Pool offers not only a seasonal highlight, but also an early glimpse of the changes taking shape as Newquay Zoo enters its next chapter.
