Newquay Zoo welcomes its first white-faced saki monkey, Splodge

Look up next time you are on Tapir Island. There is a new set of eyes watching from the branches, and he has been there a couple of weeks now.

Newquay Zoo has welcomed Splodge, a 16-year-old male white-faced saki monkey, the first of his species ever to live at the zoo. He arrived from Dartmoor Zoo and, according to keepers, has already settled in brilliantly.

Where to find him

Splodge is living on Tapir Island, sharing the space with the zoo’s pygmy marmosets. He also has full access to the surrounding trees, which is where he tends to spend most of his time. The zoo is urging visitors not to forget to look up.

He is described as laid-back, happiest relaxing high in the branches, taking life at his own pace and soaking up the warm weather.

The walnut thing

There is one reliable way to get his attention. Walnuts are his absolute favourite treat, and keepers arriving with one are often greeted with what the zoo calls “the funniest little grunting sounds” while he tucks in.

Newquay Zoo says it is excited to welcome the first white-faced saki monkey it has ever housed, and is encouraging visitors to see if they can spot Splodge on their next trip.
