Newquay’s Joe Way Paddle for Life Launches £2,000 Prize Draw

Hundreds of people will take to the water at Newquay Harbour next month. This year, you don’t have to get your feet wet to be part of it.

The Joe Way Paddle for Life is back for its 18th year, and organisers have launched an online prize draw with a twist that puts you in charge of where your money goes.

A paddle built on one young man’s legacy

Joe Way was a young surfer and waterman from Newquay. He lived with a life-limiting condition, and was known for his attitude to life, the sea and helping others. Years after his passing, his story still pulls people in.

The paddle was created in his memory and has been running for 18 years. It now brings together surfers, paddleboarders, lifesavers, families, local businesses and supporters every year, and over time it has raised funds for charities, surf clubs, youth projects and organisations working with young people and families across Cornwall.

You pick where the money goes

This is the part that sets it apart. When you buy a ticket online, you can nominate any charity, community group or surf lifesaving club to receive the money from your purchase. You just leave a note in the comments when you enter. So every ticket can go straight to a cause you care about, while still supporting the paddle itself.

The draw has more than £2,000 of prizes, donated by businesses, artists and supporters from Cornwall and further afield.

The prizes

Up for grabs so far:

• A signed guitar from James Morrison
• An original painting of Newquay Harbour by Cornish artist Doug Hinge
• A YETI Roadie cooler worth around £500
• A Big F-T’s Shack Rockpool Adventure voucher for a family of five

How to get involved

Organisers want people to buy tickets before the live event and draw take place, to hit the £2,000 online target. You can also enter the paddle yourself or share the campaign online.

One of the organisers said: “Joe’s story continues to inspire people 18 years on. This online prize draw gives people everywhere the chance to support charities and surf clubs close to their hearts while also having the opportunity to win some incredible prizes. Now is the time to get involved, buy tickets and help us hit our £2,000 online fundraising target before the event.”

The paddle takes place on Thursday 18th June at Newquay Harbour from 3pm. Hundreds are expected to take to the water.
