Newquay’s Mount Wise Gardens to Close for 10 Weeks From June

Part of one of Newquay’s best-loved green spaces is about to disappear behind hoardings for the summer, and a brand new play park is the reason why.

Newquay Town Council has confirmed that a “breaking ground” ceremony for the regeneration of Mount Wise Gardens will take place later this month, with construction beginning from 1st June 2026. A section of the gardens will be temporarily closed for around 8 to 10 weeks while the works are carried out, although access through Mount Wise will still be available via the central path.

What’s Changing

The council says the scheme will transform the gardens into a more vibrant, welcoming and accessible space. At the heart of the plans is a new play park designed to be inclusive and engaging for people of all ages and abilities. The wider improvements are intended to encourage outdoor activity, social interaction and greater use of the gardens by both residents and visitors.

Plans have been shaped by feedback gathered during a period of public consultation. The council has said it understands there may be questions about the changes, but that the proposals have been carefully developed to complement existing green spaces.

Trees and Planting

The council has worked with partners including Newquay in Bloom to preserve the character of the gardens. Existing trees and planting will be retained wherever possible, with no unnecessary removal.

What the Council Says

Dan Watkin, Director of Operations at Newquay Town Council, said the project represents a significant investment in the town’s public spaces.

“We are eager to get started and to deliver on our Corporate Plan commitment to enhance community services within the town,” Dan said. “This project represents a significant investment in our public spaces and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to listening to the community and responding with positive, practical action. We anticipate that this new facility will be available for residents and visitors to enjoy later this summer, and we look forward to seeing Mount Wise Gardens thrive as a renewed focal point for the community.”

The council has published a footpath closure map showing which areas will be affected during the works.

If all goes to plan, the new play park should be open in time for the back end of the summer holidays.
