What £154k Has Changed at Newquay’s Leisure Pool

There is a snake in the pool at Newquay Leisure World. A floating one, and it is meant to be there.

An investment of £154k has led to significant improvements to the leisure pool at Newquay Leisure World.

What’s new

The headline additions are the playful ones. A floating snake feature now sits in the water, and the shallow end has gained a frog water fountain and a toddler slide for younger swimmers.

The rest of the work went deeper. Two new flume pumps have been installed, and the filters have been replaced with more sustainable glass media that use less energy and water. The bridge has been strengthened and redecorated, the orange flume and tower have been repainted, and a new large flume floor has gone in. A new heating coil and recovery session has also been fitted for greater energy efficiency.

“Work started in February and, whilst the bulk of the upgrades were completed by the time the leisure pool opened at Easter, long lead times on the new features meant they have only just been fitted,” said Hannah Fautley-Morgan, General Manager.

When you can swim

The pool is currently open at weekends and every Wednesday afternoon after school. That will expand into a full daily programme by 20 July.

“Swim school pupils enjoy free access to swim for all and family fun swim sessions in the leisure pool and, with everything now completed, we’re set for summer,” Hannah said.

Who runs it

Newquay Leisure World is run by GLL, the not-for-profit social enterprise that operates under the Better brand. GLL runs the centre and eight other Cornish leisure centres on behalf of the Council.

“The upgrades have made a real difference, both in terms of sustainability and extra enjoyment,” said James Curry, GLL Head of Service for Cornwall.
