Coastguard Responds to Swimmer Report Near Harlyn Bay

A report of concern for a swimmer off the north Cornwall coast prompted an emergency response on Tuesday 7th April, before being stood down as a false alarm.

Call-Out Between Harlyn and Trevone

At 14:10hrs, HM Coastguard Padstow received a tasking following concerns for a swimmer spotted around 150 metres out to sea between Harlyn Bay and Trevone.

Conditions at the time included a very large swell, leading the first informant to raise concerns for the swimmer’s safety.

Teams Respond and Assess the Situation

Coastguard volunteers made their way to a vantage point between Trevone and Harlyn in order to get eyes on the situation.

At the same time, RNLI Harlyn lifeguards launched their Inshore Lifeboat and went out to check on the swimmer.

Swimmer Found to Be Safe

After reaching the individual, lifeguards confirmed that the swimmer was well equipped and experienced. They were able to continue their swim without assistance.

The incident was recorded as a false alarm with good intent, and all responding teams were stood down.

Thanks Issued to Those Involved

HM Coastguard Padstow thanked Padstow lifeguards for their assistance, as well as the member of the public who raised the alarm.

The Coastguard reiterated that if anyone sees a person in difficulty on or near the coast, they should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
