Watch rock turn to molten tin at Geevor Tin Mine
Visitors to Geevor Tin Mine later this month will be able to watch Cornish tin ore turned into finished metal, in a live demonstration of a process that once ran across west Cornwall. It takes place on Sunday, 26 July 2026, and is being led by the Exploration Manager at Cornish Tin & Lithium, Ryan Hichens.

What is happening
Ryan will smelt tin ore into tin metal using a modern gas-fired furnace, recreating the ancient extraction process that shaped this part of Cornwall for centuries. The furnace brings the ore up to the temperatures needed to release the metal locked inside the rock. Visitors will see the intense heat, the glowing molten metal, and the change from raw rock to refined tin.
Two demonstrations on the day
There are two live demonstrations, at 11:00am and 1:00pm, and each one lasts around an hour.
