Penzance Council is offering a unique opportunity for residents to learn what it takes to become a councillor ahead of the Local Elections on 1st May 2025. A free ‘Be A Councillor’ Taster Event will be held on Monday 10th March from 5pm – 7pm in the Alverne Room at St John’s Hall, Penzance.

What to Expect at the Taster Event

The event will provide insight into what it means to be a councillor, the responsibilities involved, and how to stand for election. Attendees will have the chance to:

  • Hear from councillors and council staff about the role.
  • Ask questions about the election process.
  • Learn how councillors help shape the community.
  • Gain a better understanding of what’s involved before deciding to stand.

Following the session, attendees will also be invited to stay and watch the Full Council meeting at 7pm.

Who Can Stand for Election?

This May, all 20 seats across Penzance Parish will be contested, covering the following wards:

  • Penzance Promenade – 6 seats
  • Penzance East – 6 seats
  • Newlyn & Mousehole – 5 seats
  • Heamoor & Gulval – 3 seats

Penzance Council is looking for people from all backgrounds and experiences to come forward. No prior experience or special qualifications are needed – just a passion for the local community. Councillors can represent a political party or stand independently.

Why Become a Councillor?

Serving as a councillor is a chance to make a real difference in the community. The role allows individuals to:

  • Influence decisions that affect the area.
  • Gain new skills and confidence while working with local organisations.

Anyone interested is encouraged to attend the ‘Be A Councillor’ Taster Event at St John’s Hall on 10th March. Refreshments will be available, and the session will include a presentation by Town Clerk James Hardy at 5.45pm.
