Drug swipes carried out in ten Penzance pub and bar toilets

Officers visited ten pubs and bars across Penzance, and part of what they did there took place in the toilets.

Ten venues visited under Operation Scorpion

On Tuesday 23 June 2026, PC Sally Freeman and PC Jade Smith, the local Neighbourhood Beat Managers, went out across Penzance alongside Police Licensing Officer Kelly Warburton. The work formed part of Operation Scorpion.

A total of 10 licensed premises were visited. Drug swipes were carried out in toilet areas at the premises. The police said these were done to raise awareness and to support licence holders in maintaining safe environments.

Officers also spoke with staff about tackling and preventing drug use in pubs and bars, how to report concerns effectively, and practical steps to keep venues and customers safe.

CCTV checks and festival readiness

The visits covered more than drugs. Sally, Jade and Kelly discussed CCTV provision and readiness with staff before the Golowan Festival, making sure venues were prepared for the busy weekend.

Licensing said it continues to work closely with premises to help them create safer nightlife spaces.

A reminder to staff

The team ended with a message for anyone working in a licensed premises. Staff with concerns, questions or a need for advice were told to speak to the Licensing Officer or their local policing team.

“Working together, we can keep Penzance safe,” the police said.
