A celebration steeped in history
Jubilee Pool in Penzance marked a major milestone today, celebrating its 90th anniversary with a big birthday splash. First opened in 1935 by the then Mayor of Penzance to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee, the iconic Art Deco lido welcomed crowds once again for a celebration packed with aquatic fun and community spirit.
Today’s anniversary event was officially opened by the current Mayor of Penzance, Stephen Reynolds. Swimmers gathered in force, diving in together and forming the number 90 in the centre of the pool in a striking tribute to its nine-decade legacy.

A packed day of entertainment
The festivities didn’t stop there. Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed a wide variety of performances and demonstrations, including:

A surf lifesaving demonstration by St Ives Surf Life Saving Club

A synchronised swimming workshop from local troupe Out of Sink

A water polo demonstration match

Live music from 1930s swing band Company B

And a special appearance from two mermaids
Support for a community treasure
Penzance Council has long supported Jubilee Pool as a vital community facility. Most recently, it allocated £40,000 of funding to help cover winter maintenance, provide subsidised entry for adults living in the parish, and continue the PZ Under 16s Free Swim scheme, which gives free access to all under 16s living in the Penzance Parish.
