Drive through Longrock, walk its pavements or leave the car in the village car park, and the next five months are going to look a little different.

Penzance BID has shared a notice from Cormac confirming that the second phase of the Longrock Highways Improvement Project in Longrock, Penzance, begins on Monday 2 November. Work is due to run until the end of March 2027.

What is being done

Cormac is delivering the scheme on behalf of Cornwall Council. It covers footway improvements, pedestrian crossings and cycling provision, running from just west of the Industrial Estate junction back towards the centre of the village, as far as the entrance to Chris Nicholls Motors.

The aim is to make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to move through Longrock.

The existing footways will be dug out and upgraded drainage installed. After that come new, wider footways with new kerbing, improved surfaces and tactile paving, plus new signage and road markings. The work will be carried out in sections.

Traffic lights, footway diversions and the car park

Site work will take place during daylight hours under three-way temporary traffic lights. Delays are possible, so drivers are being asked to allow a little extra time for journeys.

Footways will need to close while the work is done, with signed diversions in place. Pedestrian access will be kept open throughout, and barriers and other safety measures will guide people around the site.

Access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever it is safe and practical, and Cormac says it will contact anyone who may be temporarily affected directly.

Longrock Car Park will be used as the works compound. It will be closed to the public for the whole of the programme.

Getting in touch

Questions about the works can be sent to [email protected].

Problems with a road, highway or footway can be reported through Cornwall Council’s online road reporting page. Anything that poses a threat to public safety should be phoned through on 0300 1234 222, a 24-hour service, with details of the location.

A road closure later in the winter

As in the first phase, the surfacing and road markings can only be done with the road closed and a diversion route in place. That closure is expected to last one week at the end of February 2027 or early March, followed by eight shifts of night works.

Those final stages will bring more noise, temporary delays and changes to normal travel routes. And they rely heavily on the weather. Cormac notes that temperatures at that time of year “could be against us”, and says it will keep people informed closer to the time.
