Nearly 120 People Came to the Old Penlee Lifeboat Station

While Penzance filled with the noise and colour of Golowan, a quieter scene was playing out a short way around the bay.

In Penzance the crowds carried on celebrating the Golowan Festival, with Quay Fair in full swing. Meanwhile, around the shores of Mount’s Bay, the old Penlee Lifeboat Station threw open its doors to visitors.

Down the steps to the old station

Nearly 120 people, and quite a few dogs, made their way down the steps from the footpath that runs alongside the road between Newlyn and Mousehole. At the bottom they reached the former home of the Penlee Lifeboat Station.

Remembering the Solomon Browne

Visitors had travelled from near and far. Some had come especially to pay their respects to those lost on the RNLB Solomon Browne in December 1981.

Familiar faces and far-flung visitors

Among the guests were Richard, Kate and Stan the miniature schnauzer, who had come from Falmouth. Braxton, Mason and Christopher had travelled from Littlehampton.

The Lifeboat Visits Team volunteers on duty that day were Rod James, Robert Andrews, Kevin Lander and Colin Lawry.

Christopher is continuing his training to join the RNLI crew back at Littlehampton, and everyone wished him well as he carries on down that road.
