Pirates Make it 2 Out of 2

Following their 62-7 home victory back at the Mennaye Field against Teignmouth seven days earlier, Penzance & Newlyn made it two convincing wins out of two in Regional 2 Tribute Ale South West with this excellent 7-41 result.

An early start for the Pirates saw them depart Alexandra Road, Penzance, at 0900 on Saturday morning for their journey to Winscombe in North Somerset, which is just 14 miles from Bristol.

The home side had suffered a surprise 19-57 defeat against Crediton in their opening league game seven days earlier, so were expected to show a much-improved performance in Round 2. The Pirates, however, had other ideas, and were naturally keen to put in another impressive performance, which they did.

Notching up six tries to one underlined the Pirates’ dominance at the Winscombe War Memorial Recreation Ground, as six different players got on the try-scoring sheet. In order they were prop Joe Best, scrum half Sam Carter, young man of the match centre Callum Walsh, lock Ben Martin, hooker Connor Bick, and wing Dan Rhys Evans. Adding to the points tally, fly half Rhys Brownfield slotted a penalty and four conversions.

Speaking after the game Penzance & Newlyn’s head coach Murray Westren said:

“Again, for the second week running we started the game really well, relieved pressure accurately and put some nice bits of play together.

Unfortunately, the second half was a scrappier affair but credit to Winscombe for coming back into the game and to our lads for showing a defensive edge and spirit. It was also nice to finish the game with a couple of scores to end on a really positive note.”

Penzance & Newlyn: 15 Cadan Thomas 14 Dan Rhys Evans 13 Callum Walsh 12 Harris Eddy 11 Harvey Stone 10 Rhys Brownfield 9 Sam Carter; 1 Maleli Naiova 2 Connor Bick 3 Joe Best 4 Ben Martin 5 Nick Nowell 6 Stan Somers (captain) 7 Sam Carroll 8 John Stevens.

Replacements: 16 Dylan Arthur 17 Kye Beasley 18 Wes Eddy.

Penzance & Newlyn are next in action at the Mennaye Field this coming Saturday 10th October against Sherborne. The kick-off is at 3pm.
