Sixteen teams, giant bales and deckchair chicanes at Perranporth
Perranporth beach has hosted plenty of races over the years, but rarely one that asks competitors to wrestle a hay bale round a set of windbreaks in the dark. On its opening night, the Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club Beach Bale Race pulled in 16 teams ready to find out how much strength they had left after a summer on the sand.

A course built to trip you up
The bales came courtesy of Callestick Farm Ice Cream and RJ Trevail Ltd, and they were not light. Simon J and Ben B laid out a course with tricky chicanes, using big windbreaks supplied by Cornish Windbreaks and turning round deckchairs before the run back to the finish.
It made for a proper test. Teams had to keep the bale moving, hit the turns and hold their nerve through the tight sections without losing ground.
Rusty Rollers, The Last Straw and the young winners
Three titles were up for grabs. The Rusty Rollers took the Open race, The Last Straw won the Ladies race, and the Youth Bale Racers came out on top in the 14+ category.
A big mention went to Storm fitness, who brought three teams and plenty of energy, and to every team who turned up to back the fundraiser.
Already looking to 2027
The club thanked everyone who pulled it together, and Perranzabuloe Parish Council for the use of the beach. With one race done, planning for the 2027 event is already under way.
